The Bloomfield Hills High School tennis team was recognized at a recent Bloomfield Hills School Board meeting for its accomplishments.
Trustee Paul Kolin said the team was highly skilled and dedicated, and it showed on the court. The team won 149 out of 150 individual matches, which was "an incredible feat."
"So, one of the things we [take] pride [in] as a district is high expectations and achieving, obviously, those high expectations as well," Kolin said during the meeting. "And I think the boys tennis team is a tribute to that … I think the biggest problem that the team had all year is they have so much talent in terms of the ability that they have on this team. But, with that said, as we all know and people who follow sports and everyone knows ... I follow a lot of sports.
"Just because you have a lot of talent, just because you have high expectations doesn't mean you necessarily you're going to take it all, win the state championship or win, you know, at a high school level, a state championship. But, I think what was great about this team is, again, [at the] beginning of the year, high expectations. And then, you know, if you followed them, which I did throughout the year, it was incredible that the high expectations, as much as they were, they overachieved."
The boys tennis team had an incredible regular season; they also went through regionals with a dominant force to win the championship. All but one of their teams got into the semifinals on day two of the two-day state championship. They earned enough points to win the tournament before the day ended. They easily walked away with the state title.
The entire team also won academic accolades for Division 1 in fall 2022. Two of the seniors – Drew Davis and Toni Vasile – received specific recognition for academic achievement. The rest of the team included Malik Alabbas, Sam Basil, Jonah Chernett, Merrick Chernett, Michael Dillon, Ethan Endelman, Asher Langwell, Kierth Lingam, Dominic Pascarella, Ryan Rose, Pierce Shaya, and Daniel Stojanov.
