Berman: Government employee salary information needs to be 'more easily accessible' to public

Lawmoney07

State Rep. Ryan Berman (R-Commerce Township) believes transparency in government would benefit Michigan.

Berman wrote in an opinion that he has continued to strive for government transparency through his bill, House Bill 5015, which requires state departments to post salary information for positions. He said the practice is a good one to give individuals access to important information.

In his opinion piece, Berman noted that many people are actively seeking this information and that Michigan is ranked low on public access to information, which needs to change.

"People don’t want to be around things they don’t trust," Berman wrote. "We must do better to establish a good faith relationship and I’m confident our state can improve in this area."

Berman supports the passage of his bill.

"It’s clear through the budget process that Michigan residents are interested in where their money is going and what it’s being used for," Berman wrote. "We need to make our government employee salary information more easily accessible, so we can be transparent to the people funding those paychecks."
