Farmington Public School District recently issued the following announcement.
Christina Rose, 5th grade teacher at Lanigan Elementary School, opened up a division cafe called Rose’s Donuts today in her classroom. The idea is simple - students work for Ms. Rose at her cafe by solving division problems. Each student has to solve 10 problems to “get paid,” with the goal of solving all 24 problems. Students are “paid” in donuts. Students choose a division problem from a stack of cards and solve it any way that they know how. In class, students are encouraged to ask their “co-workers” or the boss for help, if they need it.
“This is an incredible way to expose children to the idea of having a job, all while learning division in the process,” stated Ms. Rose. “The donuts are just a fun incentive for the students.”
