Farmington Public School District recently issued the following announcement.
Activities across the District celebrating Black History Month
-District pre-recorded program titled “I Too am America” - focused on African-Americans in the arts will feature student performances, profiles on prominent African-American artists, and a student panel. This program will involve K-12 students.
Elementary Activities
-Highlights of African American leaders each morning during daily video morning announcements. Teachers are making authentic connections within the curriculum and providing time during morning meetings for students to deepen their understanding about the contributions African Americans have made.
-Inviting FPS leaders into class meetings throughout the month for students to learn about their experiences and leadership journeys.
-Differentiated books of the month for K-2 and 3-5 that teachers will read aloud and do connecting activities with the students.
-Our Student Community Builders (which is our student equity leadership group) is preparing a Black History Month presentation for our Feb. 18th school wide virtual assembly.
-Book displays in Media Centers
-Bottle Buddy Biographies
-Student Biographies positioning students as Influential Black Americans
-Student art work around the buildings
Middle School Activities
-Virtual Locker Contest
-Daily announcements highlighting significant contributions to black movement
-Essay contest - sponsored by one of our parents ($300 reward)
-Posters created around buildings produced by students showcasing Black movement/contributions
-Daily lessons for teachers to share with their students in WIN each morning.
-Trip to the Charles H. Wright Museum
High School Activities
-Black Student Unions doing daily announcements following our other announcements.
