Funds will assist Automotive Technology programs

Oakland Schools has received a grant for $90,000 from the Margaret Dunning Foundation to support local high school state-approved Career and Technical Education (CTE) Automotive Technology programs.

The funds will assist in providing equal learning opportunities to students participating in these valuable programs as well as allow Oakland Schools to update learning labs and equipment, plus provide instructors with professional learning and teaching opportunities.

“The Margaret Dunning Foundation continues to provide financial support for the students in Oakland County and we are grateful,” said Oakland Schools’ Superintendent Dr. Wanda Cook-Robinson. “This endowment will directly impact our Automotive Technology programs ensuring that our students are trained with industry-standard equipment.”

Support from the Margaret Dunning Foundation will specifically impact Automotive Technology programs and students at high schools in Farmington/Farmington Hills, Huron Valley, Oxford, and Troy, and the four Oakland Schools Technical Campuses. These CTE programs are accredited by the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Education Foundation (formerly NATEF). Students earning ASE industry-recognized certifications in 10 areas of service are employable or may move on to post-secondary automotive technology education.

About The Margaret Dunning Foundation:

The Margaret Dunning Foundation was founded by Ms. Dunning in 1997. She was born in 1910 in Redford Township, Michigan, and moved with her mother to Plymouth, Michigan in the 1920s. During her lifetime, Ms. Dunning was a successful businesswoman, philanthropist and civic booster.

She was a major supporter of many Plymouth nonprofits, including the Plymouth District Library and the Plymouth Historical Society. In addition to her personal philanthropy, Ms. Dunning was a classic car enthusiast and a regular participant in the Woodward Dream Cruise with her 1930 Packard 740 Roadster. Ms. Dunning died in 2013 at the age of 104. Her estate provided additional funding for the Margaret Dunning Foundation, which continues to support her charitable interests and legacy.
