POSSIBLE CHARITY SCAM
On October 6th a Farmington business owner was contacted by phone at her business by an unknown caller who claimed to work for a charity. The caller solicited a donation for a charity and alleged that the business owner had donated to him in the past. To further legitimize his request, the caller told the business owner that a well known Farmington Police Sergeant had told him to contact the business owner for the donation.
The business owner agreed to make a donation and within minutes a man showed up at the business to retrieve the donation. The business owner agreed to write a check to the charity, but the man became upset, wanting cash instead. The business owner became suspicious and refused to donate. The man left without incident and the business owner later reported the incident, learning that the police sergeant had never talked with anyone regarding a charity.
It is unknown if the man was soliciting for a legitimate charity or not, but Farmington Police are advising area businesses to be aware of this incident and to thoroughly vet the charities that they donate to.
