State Representative Donni Steele from Orion Township has introduced House Bill 4477, which seeks to enhance water safety education for young people. The bill mandates the Department of Education to develop a water safety curriculum for school children. This program would cover essential topics such as the proper use of flotation devices, the importance of supervision, and various swimming techniques.
"We live in a state surrounded by water in nearly every direction," Steele stated. "It's vital to the welfare of our children that we teach them how to stay safe and be responsible in our lakes, rivers, ponds, and pools."
The proposed legislation has been sent to the Committee on Education and Workforce and is currently awaiting a hearing. Steele expressed her hope for bipartisan support from fellow legislators.
"Collaborating to educate our kids and prioritize their safety should be a non-partisan issue," she said. "I invite all my colleagues to join me in supporting this legislation."
