South Lyon Community Schools issued the following announcement on May 8
Dear South Lyon Community Schools Families,
Thank you to the many students and families that recognized our teaching staff this week for their incredibly impactful work with our students. I am grateful for the hard work and leadership that many staff have exhibited during the pandemic. We will continue to feed our students through June. We are thankful that this program has expanded to allow us to serve our students a few weeks longer than initially planned.
We are observing the conversations in Lansing about school funding for this and the next school year. We know that tax revenue will be reduced dramatically during this crisis and expect the lack of tax revenue to impact our funding next year. One problem we see is that we will be facing is that we don’t expect to get clear direction from Lansing until later this summer. The current legal requirement is that the Board of Education has to approve a budget by June 30 of each year. We are currently building a budget for the Board of Education to consider a $500 per pupil reduction, which is about a 6.5% reduction in funding, and this may not be enough. Our goal is to protect classroom instruction and services necessary to continue to provide the quality education you have come to expect in South Lyon. We will continue to update you as we learn more about the finances for next year.
During this time, there are several people at home for extended periods, and this can cause stress not generally associated with being with loved ones. This video discusses helping teens with emotional adjustment to social distancing, including how to balance online learning and socializing. In this article, you will find tips and strategies that parents can use to help support teens during this time. It also provides support to parents in regards to adolescent emotional wellness. Here is a link to a webinar with information about parenting during the pandemic. We share these resources to assist with the changing times that we are all experiencing. If you haven’t already, please complete this wellness check-in survey. We ask that all families complete the survey so that we can determine where additional help may be necessary to support students and families.
The search for the next Superintendent for South Lyon Community Schools continued this week. Tuesday evening Steve Archibald and Dr.Matt Outlaw had a second interview with the Board of Education. Wednesday and Thursday, candidates spent time responding to questions submitted to them by staff, administrators, and community members. The process will continue with more interactions with the Board of Education, and they will have the next Superintendent in place by July 1, 2020
