Farmington Public School District issued the following announcement on Aug 6.

Derek McDowell selected to take the helm of the FHS Boys' Basketball Program

Farmington High School is pleased to announce that Derek McDowell will be taking the helm of the Boys' Basketball program.  Derek brings a wealth of experience to the position including roles as both a high school and college coach.

Most recently, Derek coached at Detroit Western High School where his 2015 team was a state champion.  That same year, Derek was selected as the Michigan High School Coach of the Year in Basketball.  Additionally, Derek coached at Detroit Redford High School where his teams experienced tremendous success including deep runs into the state tournaments.

At the college level, Derek has been an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan University, Central Michigan University, and Wayne State University.  These experiences have made Derek keenly aware of what it takes for a high school student to transition into post-secondary education successfully.

Derek’s knowledge of basketball, along with his proven track record of success, will be a valuable asset to the program at Farmington High School.  Additionally, Derek has enjoyed a long career in public education and is well acquainted with the unique needs of young adult student-athletes.

Throughout the interview process, Derek emphasized the importance of building a culture of success, both on and off the court.  Derek believes that it is this culture of success which supports young adults once they transition beyond high school.  Understanding the value of hard work, focusing on obtainable goals, and building strong relationships are all cornerstones of Derek’s coaching philosophy.

Welcome, Derek!
