Waterford School District issued the following announcement on Aug 25.
Ken Frenkel, long time Waterford educator, has bequeathed $90,000 to the Waterford Foundation for Public Education. The Waterford Foundation announced the creation of the Ken Frenkel Legacy Endowment, in which the $90,000 will be earmarked for mentoring new Waterford School District teachers. The Legacy Endowment will be used to enhance professional development programming such as teacher labs, speakers, and other staff educational resources. These dollars will have a broad impact on teachers, ultimately impacting Waterford students.
Frenkel joined the Waterford School District in 1970 after graduating from Oakland University. He taught social studies, history, and psychology at Waterford Kettering and was beloved by staff and students. Former colleague Josh Wenning said “Ken would always reach out to younger teachers, build relationships with them, and continuously offer encouragement”. “Ken would be excited to know that his gift will help new teachers become experienced, enthusiastic and effective professionals”, writes Robin and Bob Schuetz.
The non-profit Waterford Foundation, established in 1984, is proud to proclaim it has an endowment over $2,000,000. Foundation trustees, volunteers, sponsors, and patrons have raised or donated money for many worthy projects within the Waterford School District. The Foundation exists to promote and recognize excellence in teaching and learning. Funding, derived strictly from donations or fundraising activities, supports teacher and student recognition events such as the grant program for District staff; Select Fifty for high school seniors, Durant Most Improved Program, scholarships for high school seniors, and outstanding teacher of the Year Award and Reception.
