Highland Township Fire Department recently issued the following announcement.
It is with a heavy heart we report the unexpected death of one of our own. Lieutenant Matthew Overby lost his life off duty on February 7th, 2022. He leaves behind a Wife of 15 years and two beautiful daughters. Those girls were his world. (His love for them comes way before his love for fishing or hunting!) LT Overby has served the residents of Bloomfield Township for over 18 years. He was not only a valued member of our department, but Michigan Task Force One & the OAKWAY Tech Rescue Team. Serving the residents of Oakland County & State of Michigan.
LT Overby was known for a lot of things around the fire house. He never lied to you when asked a question, always dropping whatever he was doing to help you figure out the answer. Spent more time on the computer doing “paperwork” then anyone I’ve ever met. Had a known hate for SOPs. Had the ability to over analyze many (most) issues and situations. Randomly threw in movie or TV quotes into conversation. But was the most calm and quiet person you’ve ever met when things got bad. He was who you wanted on your side when shit hit the fan. He always took the new and young Firefighter under his wing and helped mold them into the perfect firefighter. He was born a leader and a hero.
In this brotherhood we share many emotions and experiences others may not. And right now… I’m not sure there is an emotion for this. But, we will do everything in our power to honor LT Overbys memory everyday single day. Rest In Peace Lieu, we got it from here.
*A fund has been created through the BTFD Charities for his wife and children. All donations will go directly to the family.
