On July 9, 2025, Stevens criticized the Trump administration's approach to tariffs, stating "Every day is Tariff Day in the Trump administration - give me a break! We need to get serious about taking on China, which is why I'm introducing the Unearth America’s Future Act, because with bold industrial policy, we can lower costs, create jobs, and end our dependence on".
